FLOW SHEET for PLACEMENT and ENGLISH PROFICIENCY (EXEMPTION) EXAMINATIONS

Placement Exam

1. Students who have newly registered to our university do not need to register to the School of Foreign Languages in order to take the placement test. The lists of students who will take the exam are announced by the School of Foreign Languages on the website https://www.ktu.edu.tr/ydyo before the relevant exam.

2. The Placement Exam is held in different sessions if the number of students participating in the exam is high. Information on the day, time and place regarding where our students will take the exam is announced in the "announcements" section on the School of Foreign Languages website.

3. The results of the Placement Exam are announced in the "announcements" section on the School of Foreign Languages website after all sessions of the relevant exam are completed.

4. Students who score above the grade threshold (B1 level) determined by the Board of Directors in the Placement Exam will take the Exemption Exam on the date specified in the academic calendar of the School of Foreign Languages. Students who are at A1 and A2 levels cannot take the Exemption Exam and are placed in classes appropriate to their level to receive preparatory education.

5. The Placement Exam does not provide exemption from the preparatory class.

6. For departments where the language of instruction is partly or entirely English, every student is required to take the Placement Exam. Students who do not take the Placement Exam are not allowed to take the Exemption Exam.

7. If the students newly registered to our university do not take the Exam, they are placed in A1 Level classes. Those students do not need to apply for registration at the School of Foreign Languages.

8. Undergraduate and graduate students who could not complete the preparatory education in the 2023-2024 Academic Year (due to absenteeism or failure) will directly take the relevant Exemption Exam without taking the Placement Exam. Undergraduate students who have failed in previous academic years take the Exemption Exam for undergraduate students, and graduate students take the Exemption Exam for graduate students.

9. Placement Exams are conducted in a computer-based way in the Computer Laboratory on the ground floor of the Mechanical Engineering Department building.

10. Students must have their personal wired headphones with them to answer the questions in the listening part of the exam. Click here for detailed information about the Placement Exam.

Preparatory Class Exemption (Proficiency) Exam

1. The Exemption Exam is held in the School of Foreign Languages building.

2. The exemption exam is applied to students who receive a grade above the grade determined by the School Board (B1 level) in the Placement Exam.

3. The Exemption Exam consists of 3 (three) sessions. Students must attend all three sessions on the date, time and hall specified in the Placement Exam results announcement.

4. There is no Make-up Exam for the Exemption Exam.

5. The Exemption Exam passing score for the undergraduate and graduate preparatory class students of the departments where the medium of instruction is 30% English is 60, and it is 70 for undergraduate and graduate preparatory class students of the departments where the medium of instruction is 100% English.

6. Students who are successful in the Exemption Exam can continue the undergraduate or graduate education program taught in a foreign language for which they are eligible. If students fail the Exemption Exam, they are placed in B1 level classes to receive preparatory education.

8. Undergraduate and graduate students who could not complete the preparatory education in the 2023-24 academic year and before can submit their petitions to the Foreign Languages Department Secretariat or send them to ydo@ktu.edu.tr to participate in the Exemption Exams.

NOTE: Students who want to study in the Optional Preparatory Class apply to the Students’ Affairs Office of our University and change their status to "0 (zero)" (Preparatory Program Student) and take the Placement Exam on the same date as the other newly registered undergraduate students.

IMPORTANT: Students of Western Languages and Literature (the Department of English Language and Literature) cannot take the Placement and Exemptions Exams given by the School of Foreign Languages.
